Join the CEPIS Computing in Schools SIN Meeting 

 

Following the 49th Council decision to create a new Special Interest Network (SIN), the CEPIS Computing in Schools SIN, would like to convene its first meeting in Brussels. This new SIN will work on creating advocacy material for members of the group with a view to influencing curricula and teachers at the national level. The SIN will also analyse current initiatives in place in Europe to take examples of good practice so as to influence governments. Call for Events: 2013 Federated Conference on Computer Science and Information Systems


The 2013 Federated Conference on Computer Science and Information Systems (FedCSIS) organised by the Polish Information Processing Society (PIPS) has opened a call for events to take place within the 2013 programme. This conference consists of a series of events that provide a platform for researchers, practitioners and academics to discuss ideas, challenges and solutions related to computer science and information systems. FedCSIS welcomes proposals for new events (e.g. conference, symposium, workshop, etc.) that may run during  any length of time during the conference dates. Call for Tender - Study on Web Apps in Europe 


The European Commission recently published a call for tender regarding web apps and services in Europe. The study will analyse the impact of the apps economy on growth and jobs in Europe. More particularly, the objective is to know the size of the apps economy in Europe as well as the type of new jobs created. This knowledge together with the identification of the bottlenecks will pave the way to the preparation of a roadmap of policy actions to take the full benefits of the emerging apps economy for Europe. Call for Proposals – ARTEMIS Embedded Computing Systems Initiative


The European Commission launched a new call for proposals for the ARTEMIS Joint Undertaking which is a public-private partnership between the EC, Member States and the industry. The objective of the ARTEMIS Joint Undertaking is to help European industry consolidate and reinforce its world leadership in embedded computing technologies. Over 98% of all computing chips are are indeed hidden or embedded in all sorts of thing, such as cars or mobile phones, that do not even look like computers.  The economic impact of embedded computing systems in terms of jobs and growth is expected to exceed € 100 billion over ten years. Call for Proposals – Study on Women Active in the ICT Sector


The European Commission recently launched a call for proposals to identify and analyse the most effective practices in structural and cultural change and the 'economic case' for fostering higher participation of girls and women in ICT studies, careers, digital world. The envisaged study will also cover ICT-related career image changes and explore what is means to have ICT skills as well as how and where those ICT skills can be employed. Call for Proposals – ICT Cooperation Programme


The European Commission published the 10th Call for Proposals under the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) theme of the EU’s Seventh Framework Programme. The objective of this Call is to improve the competitiveness of European industry and enable Europe to shape future developments in ICT in order to meet the demands of its society and economy. This call addresses 8 challenges ranging from ‘Pervasive and Trusted Network and Service Infrastructures’ to ‘ICT for Learning and Access to Cultural Resources’, and covers additional themes such as International Cooperation and Future and Emerging Technologies. Call for Tender – Study on Social Innovation in the Digital Agenda

 

The European Commission’s Community Research and Development Information Service (CORDIS) published a call for tender for a large study on social innovation in the Digital Agenda for Europe (DAE). The study focuses on the social innovation enabled by the network effect of the Internet and by new models for co-production and sharing of content. The objective is to identify the actors involved in social innovation and to analyse their approaches in relation to the DAE, as well as to mobilise new actors and the general public in view of future research actions and social innovation activities. Call for Tender - e-Skills: Monitoring and Benchmarking Policies and Partnerships

 

The European Commission’s DG for Enterprise and Industry recently published a call for tender regarding the monitoring and benchmarking of e-Skills. More specifically, the goals of this service contract are to monitor key indicators and scenarios on the supply and the demand of e-skills and to benchmark national policy initiatives and multi-stakeholder partnerships in the European Union. This service contract also aims to propose new approaches to remedy the situation and to identify better ways to foster multi-stakeholder partnerships to reduce e-skills shortages, gaps and mismatches. This call for tender is open until 28 September 2012.


 

Call for Tender - e-Skills: International Dimension and Impact of Globalisation

 

The European Commission’s DG for Enterprise and Industry recently published a call for tender regarding the international dimension and the impact of globalisation on e-skills. The objective of this service contract is to study the international dimension of the e-skills strategy (especially the efforts to promote ICT professionalism) and to assess the impact of globalisation on high-level e-skills requirements (ICT practitioners’ skills and e-leadership skills), as well as to analyse major policy initiatives and best practices in the world. This should help to understand better the international dimension of e-skills in order to better anticipate change, envisage possible future cooperation and improve efforts to develop e-skills for Europe. This call for tender is open until 28 September 2012.


 

Call for Tender - e-Skills: European Guidelines and Quality Labels for New Curricula

 

The European Commission’s DG for Enterprise and Industry published a call for tender to develop European guidelines and quality labels for new curricula fostering e-leadership skills based on market needs and best practices. The guidelines and quality labels should be compatible with the European quality assurance reference framework for vocational education and training. A pilot demonstration of the implementation of the proposed European guidelines and quality labels should be organised as well as a dissemination campaign. This call for tender is open until 28 September 2012.


 

Join the CEPIS Research Task Force!

 

CEPIS would like to call upon the knowledge and experience that all CEPIS members possess to develop a strong Research Task Force. The first step of the Research Task Force will be to establish a work programme that may include a review of common research issues and concerns across Europe. Members are invited to submit expressions of interest to participate in this Research Task Force by emailing Michel Krmek.


Call for Papers - Annual Privacy Forum 2012 

 

The Annual Privacy Forum 2012 will take place on 10 - 11 October in Limassol, Cyprus. This event provides a common platform for academia, industry and policy makers to discuss the impact of online communications on society, in relation to online privacy. The aim is to strengthen ties between research and policy on data protection. This event is organised by the European Commission, the European Network and Information Security Agency and the University of Cyprus. A call for papers is open until 25 June. The Cyprus Computer Society and CEPIS Member is hosting a Gartner Briefing on 24 May 2012 in Nicosia, at the Cleopatra Hotel. Registration Still Open for Third Information Technology Conference & Exhibition - Cyprus

 

On 17 May 2012, the 3rd Information Technology Conference & Exhibition will take place in the Hilton Park Hotel, Nicosia in Cyprus. This conference is organised by IMH and supported by the CEPIS Member, Cyprus Computer Society. In these times of economic crisis it is essential to strengthen a business' defences, and the conference will look at how technology and informatics can allow companies to thrive. Open Vacancies in ICT for Learning, Creativity and Innovation - EC Joint Research Centre - Seville

 

The European Commission's Joint Research Centre, Institute for Prospective Technological Studies currently has two vacancies available for post-doctoral researchers in the area of ICT for Learning, Creativity and Innovation. This area of the Information Society Unit focuses on developing current and future learning opportunities (including digital competences and skills). The vacancies available are focused on two different topics; Mainstreaming Innovative Learning Practices, and Open Education, Resources and Practices. Any interested post-doctoral researchers with a background in ICT and Learning are encouraged to apply before the deadline of 21 May 2012.

Both positions will be based in the Joint Research Centre site of Seville, Spain.

Have Your Say on Accessing Interoperability Information of Digital Products and Services

 

ICT users are often faced with difficulties when deciding to switch to a different service or product because of incompatibility issues. As part of the Digital Agenda for Europe, the European Commission is assessing the opportunity to legally bind market players to disclose interoperability information not covered by standards in order to have a more competitive market. The consultation is open until 20 June 2012 to all ICT users, developers and owners of interoperability information.


Call for Experts -  ENISA Permanent Stakeholders Group

 

The European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA) is seeking experts to be members of its Permanent Stakeholders' Group (PSG). The PSG will advise ENISA’s Executive Director in performing his/her duties and it will ensure mutual communication with relevant stakeholders on all issues related to ENISA’s work programme. Expressions of interest in becoming a member of the PSG should be emailed before 30 April 2012. Applications should include a detailed CV and a letter of motivation. Call for Experts by CEN ICT Skills Workshop for European e-Competence Framework v.3 Project Team

 

The European e-Competence Framework v3 (e-CF v3) project of the CEN (European Committee for Standardization) Workshop on ICT Skills has received European Commission funding in the context of the 2010-2013 ICT Standardization Work Programme.

The aims of the project include:

  • update the e-CF v2 published in 2010
  • create conditions for its continuous maintenance; provide enhanced user support

The selection panel will select six experts, including a Project leader, and five Project experts.

The project is expected to begin in March 2012. Please send all applications by email to Philippe Magnabosco before 4 March 2012. Call for Papers - Second European Workshop on Computing and ICT Professionalism

 

Following the first successful European Workshop on Computing and ICT Professionalism (EWCIP) in Santiago de Compostela during the 5th Iberian Conference of Technology and Information Systems, a second workshop will take place in 2012. With participation from CEPIS, the European Centre for Women and Technology and Asociación de Tecnícos de Informática (ATI), EWCIP 2012 will act as a meeting point for researchers and practitioners to discuss important topics such as computing and ICT professionalism. The workshop’s language is mainly through English although contributions in Spanish are also welcome. EWCIP 2012 invites researchers and practitioners to submit contributions describing relevant advances or experiences in a variety of different topics related to the workshop’s main themes. e-Skills Week 2012: Encouraging Young People into ICT Careers - Get Involved


Recently CEPIS became an official pan-European stakeholder in European e-Skills Week 2012. This awareness raising campaign aims to convince people across Europe – especially young people – to embark on careers in ICT. National points of contact will coordinate activities in each country. CEPIS Research Task Force Needs You!

 

The CEPIS Research Task Force is in the process of formation and members are invited to express an interest in joining. As presented by Vice President Malgorzata Kalinowska-Iszkowska at the 44th CEPIS Council the suggested work programme for the Research Task Force may include:

• a review of common research issues across Europe

• creating a list of issues and concerns affecting the area of Research to focus action on;

• preparing reports expressing CEPIS' views on Education & Research;

• investigating how legal regulations may impact on ICT e.g. patent law, copyright levies, and intellectual property rights.

In order to achieve the above objectives along with other topics relevant toMember Societies, CEPIS would like to call upon the vast wealth of knowledge and experience that all CEPIS members possess, to create a strong and committed task force.

Expressions of interest to become a representative on this new Research Task Force should be submitted by emailing Carol-Ann Kogelman.


Software Quality SIN Update: Experts Sign up Now

 

The CEPIS Software Quality Special Interest Network (SQ SIN) aims to provide a network for experts from CEPIS member societies to work together to collect, analyse, coordinate and offer educational, professional and research expertise to relevant and interested European parties.

Recently the final experts who expressed interest in joining the SQ SIN have been accepted, and an infrastructure has been set-up for all participants via Google Groups. Google Groups will be the platform for communication and coordination of the SQ SIN group and we encourage any CEPIS Members still interested in participating to please join the group by the link provided in the Members Area.


Call for Participation: CEPIS Green ICT Task Force

 

CEPIS Members are invited to participate in the important work of the Green ICT Task Force. The topic of Green ICT is essential for Europe and its environmental sustainability in the future by lowering greenhouse gas emissions, and improving energy efficiency. CEPIS Honorary Secretary, Byron Nicolaides, presented a paper on Green ICT during the 44th Council meeting.

The proposed aims of the Task Force include:

  • to raise Green ICT issues to both the European Commission and European Institutions and to participate in all relevant initiatives and events;
  • to increase the actions of Member societies in their countries in order to promote the ideas of Green ICT;
  • to ensure that ICT professionals have the required knowledge to handle Green ICT issues and are capable to design solutions and operate systems in accordance with Green ICT rules;
  • to mobilize the ICT product end-users to change their habits and to ensure that they purchase and use more environmentally friendly ICT devices that are compatible with Green criteria;
  • award enterprises or organisations that adopt and apply Green ICT measures;
  • promote the good practice of Green ICT by adopting a Green ICT certification or a Green ICT mark/sign

Currently eight out of 36 CEPIS Member societies are represented on the Green ICT Task Force.

Call for Experts: CEPIS Software Quality SIN

 

Following the decision created at the 43rd CEPIS Council, the Software Quality Special Interest Network (SQ SIN) are seeking experts in the area of software quality, engineering and innovation, who are motivated by the goal of analyzing, disseminating and promoting related best practices in Europe.

Activities of SQ SIN will include:

  • develop, discuss and promote analysis and studies on issues in the area of software quality, engineering and innovation;
  • compile and disseminate relevant information for the promotion of best practices in software quality;
  • cooperate with existing events, initiatives and projects to assist European software professionals and organisations to implement best practices;
  • promote education and qualification of European professionals in software quality, engineering and innovation best practices by providing expertise for specific activities including CEPIS projects in this area;
  • coordinate research efforts to get deeper understanding of and to develop best practices for software quality in the context of European organizations and markets.

Cooperation with existing initiatives, conferences, publications or projects as well as thelaunch of specific activities (such as surveys, analysis, studies, research, etc.) is all part of the planned actions.

Members are invited to submit expressions of interest to participate in this SIN.
