The European Commission has presented the next phase for implementation of the Digital Services Act (DSA) to relevant national authorities at a webinar held 24 January. The DSA will regulate the online distribution of content, products and services, and the designated platforms operating in the EU will have to comply with this regulation by July 2023.

The platforms will be asked to put in place a new risk management system to identify and mitigate harmful content, which will be vetted by independent audits. The Commission itself will be the primary enforcer on large online platforms, while smaller actors will be the competence of the ‘Digital Services Coordinator’, linked to the national competent authorities.
