Drop-out rates in some IT courses hit 80% in Ireland, research shows

A study by the Irish Higher Education Authority shows that between 60% and 80% of students in some computing and engineering courses are dropping out of studies or graduate in other subjects. The group most liable to dropping out are young males with low secondary school leaving examination (Leaving Cert) grades. Women are more likely than men to complete their studies. Female students also on average outperform male students in exam grades in most fields of study.

The Technological Higher Education Association said: “it is clear that students with lower Leaving Cert points and from disadvantaged backgrounds are particularly vulnerable and require more support”.

At the time where there is an increasing shortage of people with advanced digital skills, it is important to look for solutions to reverse this trend.
