GI Launches Project to Assess Software Environmental Impact

In November, the German Informatics Society (GI) kicked off the project ‘ECO:DIGIT – Enabling Green Computing and Digital Transformation.’ This collaborative effort between the GI, the Institute for Applied Ecology, the Open Source Business Alliance, adesso SE, and Siemens, aims to foster transparency, objectivity, and standardization in the assessment of the environmental impact of various software applications.

At the heart of the project is the development, validation, and deployment of an automated evaluation environment – a test bed – designed to provide clear insights into resource consumption and CO2 emissions for software applications. Post-project, this test bed will be made widely available, contributing to the establishment of a standardized methodology for assessing the environmental impact of digital technologies.
