Over 120 participants gathered at the headquarters of the Austrian Computer Society (OCG), to celebrate Austria’s most successful ICDL schools. In cooperation with the OCG, Minister of Education Mag. Christoph Wiederkehr presented awards to schools that have demonstrated outstanding commitment to strengthening digital competence.
The ICDL (International Certification of Digital Literacy) is a globally recognised qualification for digital skills and is offered by more than 800 schools in Austria. Minister Wiederkehr expressed particular satisfaction that almost 10% of the Austrian population has already earned an ICDL certificate, highlighting the importance of digital proficiency across society.
OCG President Wilfried Seyruck emphasised the fundamental role of digital literacy in modern education:
“Digital competencies have become cultural techniques, just like reading, writing, and arithmetic. Schools that embrace this responsibility prepare young people not only for the job market but for life in a digital world.”
The OCG has organised the ICDL in Austria since 1997 and continues to support schools nationwide in its implementation. The recognition of leading ICDL schools aims to encourage even more educational institutions to actively promote digital competence development.
Digital education is not a matter of tomorrow – it is already happening today. The awarded schools demonstrate that Austria is taking a leading role in preparing young people for the digital future.
