An amendment to the EuroHPC Regulation recently came into effect, allowing the establishment of AI factories under the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU). These AI factories will feature dedicated AI-supercomputers for fast machine learning and the training of General Purpose AI (GPAI) models. This initiative, part of a broader AI innovation package introduced in January, enables EuroHPC JU to acquire, upgrade, and operate these AI factories. This will enhance access to European supercomputers for scientific and industrial users, especially AI startups and SMEs, by providing a one-stop shop for AI development. The AI factories, expected to be operational by 2025, aim to boost European excellence in AI, support responsible and ethical innovation, and ensure Europe remains a leader in global AI advancements.
