European Commission’s New Funding Calls to Focus on Digital Skills

The European Commission has launched four new calls under the Digital Europe Programme, committing €140 million to accelerate the deployment of key digital technologies, with a strong emphasis on developing advanced digital skills across the EU. The calls are open until 2 September 2025.

A key highlight of this funding package is a €27 million investment to establish four new digital skills academies focused on cutting-edge areas including quantum computing, artificial intelligence, and virtual worlds. This initiative aims to equip Europe’s workforce with the expertise needed to lead in next-generation digital fields, aligning with the EU’s broader goals for technological sovereignty and innovation.

Additional funding includes €55 million to support the introduction of generative AI in public administration and the agri-food sector, alongside regulatory and semiconductor initiatives. Further calls will expand the European Digital Innovation Hubs (EDIHs) network and invest in combating disinformation, including the creation of a European Network of Fact-Checkers.

This marks the first set of calls under the 2025–2027 DIGITAL Work Programme, which supports the Strategic Technologies for Europe Platform (STEP) and seeks to drive the EU’s digital transformation through widespread adoption of advanced technologies.
