It is with great sorrow that we share the passing of Dr. Bálint Dömölki on 31 August 2025, at the age of 90.
Dr. Dömölki was a leading figure in Hungarian computer science. He played an instrumental role in creating Hungary’s first computer, the M-3, and led foundational efforts in the Hungarian system programming school, formal program specification, artificial intelligence, and internationally recognized software such as MProlog.
He co-founded and was the president of the John von Neumann Computer Society (NJSZT) for many years, and actively shaped national informatics strategies and educational initiatives.
Dr. Dömölki was recognized for his outstanding service to the international computing community with the IFIP Silver Core award.
Dr. Dömölki will be remembered as a mentor, visionary, and harmonizer of talents and ideas. His legacy endures in every Hungarian computing professional who followed his path.
“He was not a soloist – he was a master. A master who had students. He gathered excellent people around him and built communities by founding schools. He was a master who helped many in their research and development work with his selfless, profound thoughts. He was a master who shared his knowledge not only with his own team. He was a believer in cooperation as opposed to competition.”
