EU data protection watchdog challenges Europol on its data handling

The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) has challenged Europol, the European Union’s law enforcement agency, on ‘irresponsible’ handling of personal data. EDPS stresses that Europol’s processing of personal data implies severe risks for data subjects and that currently it is holding on to individuals’ data far longer than required. 

EDPS has previously ordered Europol to delete any data it has on individuals that is over six months old, provided there is no link to criminal activity.
