The European Patent Office (EPO) honoured Cordelia Schmid with the European Inventor Award 2024 during their awards ceremony in Malta. Schmid’s pioneering work in computer vision has significantly advanced artificial intelligence (AI), enabling it to interpret complex visual data and understand context in images and videos.
Her innovations allow AI to process and analyse visual information in real-time, essential for applications like self-driving cars and interactive robotics. Schmid’s self-improving machine learning models continuously enhance AI accuracy and responsiveness, promising more sophisticated AI-human interactions, particularly in healthcare.
Inspired by her scientific family, Schmid pursued mathematics before dedicating her career to computer vision. As Research Director at Inria and part-time Google employee, she bridges theoretical research and practical application, shaping the future of AI.
