The final national workshop of the “SMACITE – Boosting the technical and non-technical skills and competences of Smart Cities technicians and engineers” project, of which CEPIS is an associated partner, took place in Madrid on 18 February. It brought together experts and policymakers to discuss the growing skills gap in Smart Cities. Organized with the collaboration of the Spanish Informatics Society (ATI) and attended by CEPIS representatives, the event explored strategies to equip engineers and technicians with essential digital and management skills.

SMACITE focuses on training professionals for urban digitalization by combining technical expertise in Smart Cities technologies with soft, entrepreneurial, and green skills. The workshop highlighted the most in-demand professional profiles, the results of capacity diagnostics conducted during the project, and the free training courses available through the SMACITE MOOC. Participants also discussed the impact of emerging technologies such as AI, cybersecurity, and IoT on urban planning and public services, as well as the challenges professionals and public administrations face in implementing them.
The event reinforced that the success of Smart Cities depends not only on technology but on skilled professionals who can drive digital transformation effectively. SMACITE’s training initiatives aim to prepare the next generation of experts to lead this evolution.
