Cedefop has published a special edition of its working paper series examining how digital technologies, including artificial intelligence, are reshaping skill needs and mismatches across Europe’s labour markets. Drawing on the second wave of the European Skills and Jobs Survey (2021), the volume brings together ten original studies by external researchers, offering the first in-depth analyses of the ESJS microdata.
The papers explore how automation and digitalisation affect adult workers’ skills, job quality, training opportunities and job security, with topics ranging from Covid-19-driven digitalisation and worker well-being to organisational learning cultures, digital skill demand, task automation, and skill shortages in strategic EU sectors such as AI, defence and education.
The findings were also presented at the workshop Human-centred digital transitions: skill mismatches in European workplaces, held at Cedefop’s premises in Thessaloniki in December 2024. Related presentations, including on the ESJS, are available via Zenodo.
Stakeholders are invited to explore the publication, share it within their networks, and provide feedback—particularly with education and training experts interested in navigating Europe’s digital transformation.
