On 14 November, the European Commission released the first draft of its General-Purpose Artificial Intelligence (AI) Code of Practice, aiming to set foundational guidelines for the responsible development and deployment of general-purpose AI across the EU. Developed by independent experts appointed by the AI Office, this draft stems from extensive multi-stakeholder consultations and a dedicated workshop with AI model providers.
The draft, which will undergo further discussions next week in four working groups and a Plenary session on 22 November, sets out guidelines on transparency, copyright enforcement, risk taxonomy, assessment methodologies, and mitigation measures for advanced AI systems. Stakeholders, EU Member States, and international observers are invited to submit feedback through a dedicated platform by 28 November.
Expected to be finalised in May 2025, the Code of Practice will support the implementation of rules under the EU AI Act, set to apply from August 2025, playing a pivotal role in fostering trustworthy and safe AI practices in the EU.
